INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: the GREAT(ER) WAR of MILITARY OCCUPATIONS in EUROPE

Antecedents, experiences & legacies

The Study and Documentation Centre for War and Contemporary Society (State Archives of Belgium) and the Laboratoire de recherches historiques (University of Louvain) organized  the international conference “The GREAT(ER) WAR of MILITARY OCCUPATIONS in EUROPE: Antecedents, experiences & legacies” (23-25 June 2022) in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe, the Zentrum fur Militargeschichte und Sozialwissenschaften der Bundeswehr, the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium, the Institute for the Analysis of Change in Contemporary and Historical Societies and the Department of History of the University of Louvain.

Dr Iaroslav Golubinov presented the paper “The Environmental Dimension of the War: Occupied Lands on the Eastern Front in 1914-1918”. The proposed paper is devoted to constructing a new front-line environment on the Eastern Front (with particular attention to Galicia). Occupation of Galicia by the Russian armies combined using the natural resources (e.g., oil and petroleum products) of the land with shifting of environment to the new form of landscape — Kriegslandschaft — which is determined by the totalization of war and turning all elements of landscape to “combat formations” for deterrence of enemy.
