Toxic heritage of the war: demilitarization of Eastern Front landscapes

Dr. Julia Zerdeva (Samara National Research University, Post-doc): Toxic heritage of the war: demilitarization of Eastern Front landscapes

The states that emerged from the ruins of the multinational empires of the Eastern Front have inherited a toxic, both literal and figurative, legacy of military environmental policy. This study is aimed at investigating international cooperation in the area of the demilitarization of sea routes and land areas, and the destruction or processing of weapons; landscape remediation for various forms of management, conservation, and use of war-destroyed structures; epidemiological and protective measures to eliminate the consequences of environmental pollution by chemical weapons; prompt burying after battle or centralized burying of remains of humans and animals that perished in the course of military operations; resolution of issues related to further use of medical waste; compensation for scorched earth tactics.
